Gold Dirt Distillery’s Rocky Mountain Gin features botanicals native to the Rocky Mountain region to create a tradition-breaking, floral-forward gin. Each expression is named for a character— in this case, a fox named Ginevra.
Tasting notes
Aroma: Floral with a hint of herb and spice, Rocky Mountain Gin opens with the impression of an alpine meadow. Dry coriander spice plays around hints of camphor, lavender, white sage, and a nutty touch of pecan. Complex, with a balanced floral aroma.
Flavor: The palate is slow and evolving, with a well-defined flavor journey. Early on, lavender bursts forward. Hints of jasmine and magnolia emerge toward the mid-palate. Sage follows shortly after that initial lavender, adding a cooling, green background note.
This green note becomes cooler and more camphor-laden on the mid-palate, creating a glow of coolness toward the finish.
There is also a story of spice. While it starts quietly, the mid-palate brings a bright note of cardamom that slowly segues into cracked pink peppercorns, coriander, and black pepper warmth.
Finish: A glow of sage and lavender, with a touch of camphor and mentholic coolness. Long and pronounced, the moderate warmth is balanced by this apparent coolness.
Long and complex, Rocky Mountain Gin is a journey when sipped neat.
Cocktails and suggested serves
In a gin and tonic, I found some of the camphor and menthol to take over a bit, while in a Negroni, some of the herbal notes recede into the background.
One of my favorite serves with Ginevra the Fox Rocky Mountain Gin was the Martini. Serve it with a twist and a more delicate vermouth. The Eventide Cocktail (a 5:2 Martini variation using Cocchi Americano instead of vermouth) or a Gin and Lillet (a 1:1 Martini variation using Lillet Blanc) are great options that allow the gin’s botanicals to shine through.
Overall, Rocky Mountain Gin
Ginevra The Fox, Rocky Mountain Gin is a complex gin that marries herbal and floral notes with a touch of background juniper for a balanced, complex and boldly contemporary gin.
