Corpse Reviver #2

Notes on the Corpse Reviver #2

One of a family of cocktails— The name “Corpse Reviver” refers to the act of coming back to life after a night of drunken debauchery. In other words, “hangover cures.” After all, what’s a better cure for hangover than a bit more alcohol? For those of you who may shake their heads at this notion, let me remind you we have a modern day equivalent— the Mimosa brunch.

Qutote Harry Craddock who included the Corpse Reviver #2 in his 1930 Savoy Cocktail Book: “To be taken before 11 a.m., or whenever steam and energy are needed.”

Like the Last Word of this era, the Corpse Reviver #2 is an equal parts cocktail ; however, we do have some challenges in terms of ingredients. One of the original ingredients is no longer made. Kina Lillet’s disappearance has plagued other cocktails (for example, the Vesper). Modern ingredients such as Cocchi Americano or Lillet’s Reserve Jean de Lillet more closely approximate the flavor of the original. I prefer Cocchi, simply because it’s more widely available.
