Esteemed G&J Greenall’s Gin has a line of RTD’s made for the American market produced out of Mira Loma, California. The Blueberry Gin and Tonic is the RTD version of their full strength Blueberry flavored gin.
Greenall’s Blueberry Gin and Tonic is produced with real fruit juice, natural and artificial flavors, artificial sweetener, tonic water and their gin— it does not specifically say their Blueberry Gin. It is canned at 6% ABV.
Tasting notes
Color: Rosey violet and transparent. More purple than blue.
Nose: Blueberry jam with strawberry nuance.
Flavor: Blueberry and general berry notes dominate throughout. The sweetening is mild and reminiscent of sucralose in mouth feel.
Mid-palate, a subtle astringency eases into a finish that has more strawberry than blueberry. Juniper is subtle and faintly present if you look for it.
Restrained bitterness, Greenall’s Blueberry Gin and Tonic is less bitter than most off-the-shelf tonic waters. Gin drinkers who prefer a less bitter tonic will appreciate the tonic choice here.
Overall, Blueberry Gin and Tonic
While convenient, it pales in comparison to a home-made gin and tonic with Greenall’s surprisingly excellent blueberry gin.
It straddles a challenging line— too little juniper for gin lovers, and a bit too artificial in flavor when compared to other RTD’s on the market.
Where it comes up short for me, is the tinge of artificiality and the wealth of better options available for the American RTD consumer. Drinkable, but it’s far from Greenall’s best canned cocktail on the American market.
