Canned at 5.5% ABV Bareksten Gin Fizz is a collaboration between Bareksten and Bergen based 7 Fjell. It is sweetened with sugar and flavored with additional rhubarb
Tasting notes
Color: hazy rose and translucent
Aroma: fresh rhubarb juice with icy lemon and green juniper
Taste: Mildly fizzy, with bubbles early and dissipating quickly.
Citrus with hints of green apple, lingonberry and muted rhubarb. Gin is present and restrained with subtle juniper, Angelica and lemon. Only slightly tart, with rhubarb jam and green fruit towards the end.
sweetness is also restrained and balanced. It’s not entirely dry, but it’s not cloying either. I’d say it walks the middle road perfectly.
Overall
Bareksten is a clean, refreshing gin fizz. But you have to like rhubarb as the gin, while present, is muted. It’s less surprising as it’s only 5.5% and doesn’t add any additional flavoring.
That being said, it’s a good example of the style. The rhubarb is not so loud as to overpower the mild gin entirely. Further, the sweetness is nice and preserves some of the gin’s natural dryness. Well balanced, it’s an excellent execution of a lower ABV gin fizz that doesn’t lose sight of the source material.
