Nestled within the historic walls of Luxembourg, Mansfeld distillery draws inspiration from the opulent heritage of Peter Ernst von Mansfeld, reflecting the luxurious and multicultural legacy of the region. Their gin embodies this rich cultural narrative, crafted with a dedication to high-quality ingredients and a nod to the decadent history of the castle’s former grandeur.
Mansfield Oak Gin is aged in former champagne casks.
Tasting notes
Aroma: honeyed and slightly floral, with some hints on tobacco, oak, and chamomile.
Taste: slight vanillin, with the floral becoming clearer as honeysuckle. Champagne barrel focuses, with flavors of cola: cherry, coriander, lime zest and nutmeg. Moderately oaky with notes of wet wood.
Finish: Only slightly astringent, it instead ends with some sour and wood: cedar, cade, woody juniper branches, and a hazy echo of honeysuckle
Cocktails and Suggested Serves
Try Mansfield Oak Gin in a Negroni, at a 2:1:1 ratio (gin higher) to elevate its botanical notes. It’s good, but you may lose a bit of the barrel in a complex cocktail like this.
I generally prefer my aged gins neat or on the rocks. That would be the first way I would recommend trying, though it also works well in Old Fashioneds with rhubarb or cherry bitters
Overall, Mansfield Oak Gin
I enjoy the unusual barrel choice, and while it adds something, the whole of this gin doesn’t come together as well as some barrel aged gins. I think a shorter aging period, or a bolder more spice-forward botanical blend might balance this gin further.
Overall, Mansfield Oak Gin is a good aged gin. Try it for the unusual barrel, and for the novelty of trying a gin from a place like Luxembourg— which while not known for gin, the country sure boasts a large number of gin distilleries!
