Flavor Profile
Edinburgh Gin Distillery produces a line of gin liqueurs— bottled at 20% ABV and uses only natural flavors.
Tasting notes
Color: Transparent cerise in hue. Quite beautiful and vivid.
Aroma: Intense strawberry jam with a hint of dusty pink peppercorn. Also quite beautiful. Love the way the berry and peppercorns marry together.
Flavor: The big picture— there’s more gin character than some pink gins I’ve tasted at double the ABV.
First, some strawberry, waxy juniper and angelica. Mild sweetness for a gin liqueur. The flavor mid-to-late has some mild-berry note, restrained and clear pink peppercorn as well as coriander. Overall, it’s clean and balanced with some clear gin qualities.
However, the sweetened berry flavor can be a double edged sword. To some, the combination of sweetening and this flavor can taste like a children’s medicine.
Finish: Moderate sweetness with strawberry sticking to the lips.
Cocktails and suggested serves
Even though it’s a liqueur, I think it works best mixed. The sweetness will carry the gin and berry in a gin and soda. It’s best pairing might be a dry sparkling lemonade, with the lemon adding a tangy balance to the near cloying sweetness of the liqueur.
Overall, Edinburgh Strawberry and Pink Pepper Liqueur
Easy to sip, with clear gin character, it can read as a touch medicinal on its own. I recommend it mixed. However, with those caveats in mind, Edinburgh Strawberry and Pink Pepper Liqueur is ultimately successful at marrying those additional flavors with gin and added sweetening. The end result is middling, but I’d prefer it to many pink gins on the market.
