Alabama Slammer recipe
½ oz. Amaretto
½ oz. Southern Comfort
½ oz. Sloe Gin
1 ½ oz. orange juice
Build drink in glass over ice. Stir to combine.
The Alabama Slammer is consumed as a shot. Stir the ingredients together with ice and strain into shot glasses.
Gin recommendations
There’s so much going on in here that the choice of gin is an afterthought. You won’t be able to taste much of it in here.
If you are looking to sip an Alabama Slammer and you want to taste some gin— I recommend starting from a higher ABV Sloe Gin. That Boutiquey’s Double Sloe (44% ABV) is a good baseline. It also saves the drink from being too cloying.
The story of the Alabama Slammer
Perhaps more shrouded in myth than fact, the cocktail was said to have been invented at the University of Alabama in 1975.
Written evidence is scant. While some sources say the Alabama cocktail dates back to an early 1970’s Playboy’s Bartender’s Guide, the cocktail that appeared in there bares nearly no resemblance to what we call the Alabama Slammer today.
